AP Photo/John Bazemore, FileAfter Ron Washington was hired as manager of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, he reportedly plans on putting together a diverse coaching staff.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Washington plans to hire former MLB star outfielder Torii Hunter as first base coach, Chili Davis as hitting coach, Eric Young Sr. as third base coach, Clint Hurdle as bench coach and Ryan Goins as infield coach.
Washington was hired by the Angels on a two-year contract to replace Phil Nevin, who was fired after leading the team to a 73-89 record this season. He's the first Black manager hired in MLB since 2020.
Prior to joining Washington's staff, Hunter was reportedly in the running for the manager position. Nightengale noted last week that Angels owner Arte Moreno was a big fan of the two-time Silver Slugger, who spent five years with the Angels during his 14-year major-league career.
"Torii Hunter, the five-time All-Star and nine-time Gold Glove winner, has emerged as a candidate to fill the Los Angeles Angels' managerial vacancy," Nightengale stated. "Hunter spent five years playing for the Angels and is tremendously regarded by owner Arte Moreno for his leadership and baseball acumen."
Like Hunter, Davis is a former MLB outfielder. The three-time All-Star and three-time World Series winner is the first Jamaican-born player to play in a major league game.
Goins, a former second baseman and shortstop, joins Hunter and Davis as the first-time coaches on Washington's staff. Young joined the coaching ranks in 2010 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and had served as first base coach of the Atlanta Braves since 2018, coaching alongside Washington the entire time. Hurdle is a former manager of the Colorado Rockies (2002-09) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2011-19).
Washington is hoping he and his staff can help the Angels end a nine-year playoff drought in 2024.
