Demi Lovato Suffers Makeup Mishap: Makeup Artist on How It Happens
Oh no! Demi Lovato experienced a makeup malfunction while promoting her new album, Confident, in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Stepping out at night while greeting fans, the bright flashes of the paparazzi exposed the white finishing powder beneath Lovato’s eyes, giving off an unfortunate ski-goggle tan-line vibe.
The beauty blunder suffered by the “Stone Cold” singer, 23, comes about a week after Taylor Swift‘s makeup faux pas on Oct. 7.
And they aren’t the only stars who have been affected by the look of white powder (Miley Cyrus, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie come to mind) — so why does this happen to so many celebs?
Sometimes the products themselves can be blamed. “Concealer can be either too light or too yellow,” Kelli Bartlett, Director of Makeup Artistry for Glamsquad, tells Us Weekly. While “unblended, loose translucent setting powder has been the enemy of many celebs like Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, this type of powder is reflective and blurs fine lines when applied properly. When it isn’t, the result looks chalky, cakey, and sometimes even scary!” Making sure to blend in the concealer with the rest of the makeup is the way to prevent this kind of dilemma.
Another culprit is the wrong foundation, which can make certain areas seem too light or too dark on camera, especially compared to body parts that aren’t covered in tint, like shoulders. “Color-matching foundation is difficult for most people — celebs included. The foundation shade that matched your skin two months ago is not going to match after you come back from a tropical trip, or after a spray tan!” Bartlett tells Us. “The same rules apply to concealer, which appears to be what happened to Demi.”

The easiest way for celebs to prevent having a makeup mishap is to take a test photo, Bartlett suggests. “Paparazzi bulbs are severe and harsh, so celebs are often caught in an ‘overexposed’ moment,” says Bartlett. “Take a photo with your cell phone flash on. This will show you what your makeup will look like when photographed.”
And every once in a while, powder probs come from casual touch-ups by untrained hands. “A lot of times, this disaster happens when a celeb tries to touch up their own makeup quickly while en route to an event,” Bartlett tells Us. “The best defense is a good offense! To properly apply a setting powder, press in the powder with a moist beauty blender, puff, or sponge. Then, take a medium sized blending brush and swiftly dust away the excess. Mac Fix + is a makeup spray used to sheer down makeup and will help over-powdered skin look natural again.”
