Johnny Depp left out of Golden Globe race

As the Golden Globe nominations have been released, it has come as a shock that Johnny Depp has been left out of the ‘Best Actor’ category after his highly acclaimed performance in ‘Black Mass’.

Portraying one of the most notorious gangsters in American history, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, Depp has attracted a lot of attention to not only the film but, himself. But then again, when does he not? The fantastically thrilling crime movie, ‘Black Mass’, rated 7.2/10 by IMDB, follows Bulger’s criminal life in the 1970s and the outrageous alliance made between him and FBI agent, John Connolly in order to fight the Italian Mob. Although, Depp has been left out of the Golden Globes, could he be nominated for the Academy Awards?

Depp has been nominated for ‘Best Actor’ in the Oscars three times during his legendary career of 30 years. He was first nominated for his well known portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl’, followed by his performances in ‘Finding Neverland’ and ‘Sweeney Todd’. Now it seems that Depp has taken another Oscar worthy role, earning him a lot of Oscar buzz. The positive and glowing reviews are rolling in and some have called this role, ‘Depp’s best performance yet.’

Depp himself is very much aware and conscious of the appreciation his role has earned but has stated that, ‘ I can only thank Scott for reviving my career,’ referring to his director Scott Cooper.

Although Depp has been previously nominated, this movie seems to have all the requirements for an Oscar worthy movie especially since Depp portrays a historical figure, and it is a well known fact that the Academy takes a strong liking to biopics and actors who portray real people, for example, Eddie Redmayne for his extraordinary portrayal of Stephen Hawking. Combined with the heavy and shocking transformation, Depp seems to be a strong contender for an Oscar.

As odd as it seems, the tendencies of the character that Depp plays, namely, murderous, are also known to be rewarded by the Academy. Take for example, Javier Bardem in ‘No Country For Old Men’ and Anthony Hopkins in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ not to mention Christoph Waltz in ‘Inglorious Basterds’. It’s a fact that Depp’s chilling and slightly horrifying role was done without a flaw and with absolutely no intolerable overacting. Apart from his brutal attributes, the film shows his sympathetic and affectionate side especially towards his family. Regardless of this, it’s almost certain that we will remember this role for the brutality and cunningness.

Despite his lack of a nomination in the Golden Globes, he has been nominated for an SAG and is still going strong for an Oscar.

Do you think Johnny will get the nomination?
